The History of Carpools:
Carpooling first became prominent in the United States as a rationing tactic, similar to the one in NJ and LI during Hurricane Sandy, duringWW1. It returned in the 1970s because of the 1973 oil crisis and the 1979 energy crisis. At that time the first employee vanpools were organized at 3M.
